LEADERSHIP IN ACTION
OHA Settlement
The OHA settlement with the Waiheʻe administration of $225 million in the early 90s paved the way for the many successful aid programs OHA administers today. Loans and financial grants to native Hawaiians for housing, food sustainability, and a healthy lifestyle, are possible because of the settlement between the Waiheʻe Administration and OHA when Clayton Hee served as the Chairman.
EXPERIENCED LEADERSHIP
Animal Cruelty
The friendship between Governor Cayetano and Hee has endured for over forty years. Many of the initiatives established while Clayton Hee was in the state Senate are a result of that relationship. “For example, the animal welfare laws today grew out of our mutual love and respect for all animals, especially pets,” said Hee, a well-known horseman and cowboy in the paniolo community statewide. Cruelty to Animals is now a Felony because of that friendship.

ENERGETIC LEADERSHIP
Fighting for Working People/Saving Ag Land
Senator Hee and Governor Abercrombie worked together to raise the minimum wage so that those who get paid the least could get a raise. The minimum wage went from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour due to their efforts. Governor Abercrombie and Senator Hee worked together to establish the perpetural agricultrual easement and conservation at Turtle Bay. The total land set aside for farmers and conservation was 1,200 acres.

KAHANA VALLEY
Records on file in the State of Hawaii Bureau of
Conveyances reveal an ahupua’a consisting of 5,050 acres in
Kahana was awarded to Chieftess Ane Keohokalole, mother
of King Kalakaua and Queen Lili’uokalani in 1848 land court award 8452 and royal patent 4387 these records are believed to be the first
instruments of land ownership title in Kahana.
Like other places in the history of Hawaii nei Kahana has
its own unique historical background landmarks and legends
very few of these landmarks remain visible most having
succumbed to the destructive forces of man and mother
nature.
Kahana has also contributed its share of talented
individuals in both the ancient and modem hula profession,
taro cultivation experts and akamai fishermen.

Uncle Nana
“I just wanted to do something, and this is what I could think of. Worthwhile…It’s hard work, but you gotta like what you do.” — Uncle Nana Gorai
“This was the crown jewel of Kahana,” Clayton Hee, whose district included the valley and who supported Nana’s effort to restore some of these once-productive loi-at one time, more than twenty were in use. “It gives a visual understanding of Hawaiian people, no explanation required. All over here was kalo [taro].”
